Species: CLINOZOISITE Locality: Joppa Hill Locale, Amherst, NH Specimen Size: 4 mm terminated brown crystal with diopside Field Collected: Tom Mortimer Catalog No.: u1048 Notes: This is a re-photo of this specimen. The crystal drawing is of a zoisite. It is a good match for this Joppa Hill crystal, including the small triangular face near the termination. However, a 2022 Raman analyses of Joppa Hill Clinozoisite-Zosite dimorphs by George Adleman favored a clinozoisite identification, see Raman analysis. |

Species: CLINOZOISITE Locality: Joppa Hill Locale, Amherst, NH Specimen Size: 1.3 mm field of view, (top photo). Cluster of zoisite crystals. Field Collected: Tom Mortimer Catalog No.: u487 Notes: Two views. Top view maximizes the reflection from the prism faces to enhance the striations, (at the expense of accurate color rendering). The lower photo reproduces the pale greenish-yellow color of these crystals. A polished grain EDS analysis was consistant with a zoisite identification, (the large spectral peak below oxygen is due to the carbon coating of the sample). The element chemistry of zoisite: Ca2Al3Si3O12(OH) is not that different from chabazite-(Ca): (Ca,K2,Na2)2[Al2Si2O12]2 · 12H2O , when K and Na substitution are absent. Since zoisite and clinozoisite are dimorphs, additional analysis is required to differentiate these two species. The steep termination initially biased my [tm] opinion to zoisite. |
Species: CLINOZOISITE Locality: Joppa Hill Locale, Amherst, NH Specimen Size: 1.3 mm field of view Field Collected: Tom Mortimer Catalog No.: u487 Notes: This is a re-photo of this specimen. Zoisite and clinozoisite are dimorphs, so EDS cannot differentiate these species. George Adleman examined two Joppa Hill specimens that I sent with Raman spectroscopy. The Raman result favored the clinozoisite identification over zoisite. Two RAMAN plots are included. |

Species: CLINOZOISITE Locality: Joppa Hill locale, Amherst, NH Specimen Size: 2.8 cm field of view Field Collected: Don Swenson Catalog No.: A Don Swenson specimen. Collected 2004. Notes: This is the best Joppa Hill clinozoisite specimen that I have seen, both in size and crystal quality. Pale green diopside and orange grossular are also present on this specimen. Clinozoisite is uncommon in New Hampshire. |
